Alter Ratio

Ensembles

The Alter Ratio (lat. “different thinking”) contemporary music vocal ensemble was established in 2010. Performing solo and ensemble works of 20th- and 21st-century choral music, the ensemble strives to expand the boundaries of academic singing and to introduce non-traditional vocal techniques and stage experience.

The Alter Ratio is a school of alternative performance: flexible and agile, ready for everything new in the field of solo and choral singing, open to composer’s and director’s audacious experiments. The ensemble’s mission is to raise awareness of the wide audience on the best examples of classical music of the 20th and 21st centuries, fostering the development and promotion of new Ukrainian academic music. The main direction of the ensemble’s activity is cooperation with contemporary composers and promoting their works.

Alter Ratio performed in multiple national and international festivals and venues such as Klangwerkstatt Berlin (Berlin, Germany), Berlin Widerstand der Klange (Berlin, Germany), Berliner Dom (Berlin, Germany), Festival of New Music from Ukraine (Bonn, Germany), IV Ukrainian Weeks (Gdańsk, Poland), Gdański Teatr Szekspirowski (Gdańsk, Poland), GOGOLFest (Kyiv, Ukraine), Kyiv Music Fest (Kyiv, Ukraine), National Philharmonic of Ukraine (Kyiv, Ukraine), Contrasts Festival (Lviv, Ukraine), Lviv National Philharmonic (Lviv, Ukraine), Contemporary Music Days (Vinnytsia, Ukraine), Forum Donkult (Kyiv, Ukraine), Architecture of Voice (Kyiv, Ukraine), and many others; collaborated with Goethe-Institut, British Council, America House, Sing-Akademie zu Berlin, SWR Experimental studio, Ulysses-Network, Donemus Publishing, University of Music and Drama Hamburg, Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, GVL, Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, Pro Helvetia, Österreichisches Kulturforum Kiew, and others.

The ensemble is the Grand Prix winner of the Victoria International Vocal and Choral Festival and Competition. In 2013−2014, Alter Ratio released a CD of works by Svyatoslav Lunyov “The Noel Consort” (a concert for the choir based on traditional carols). In 2017 the ensemble released “Mariologia,” an album of pieces by four Ukrainian composers: Maxim Kolomiiets (UA/DE), Svyatoslav Lunyov (UA), Alexey Retinsky (UA/AT), and Maxim Shalygin (UA/NL).
