LECTURE BY COMPOSER SERGEI NEWSKI (RUSSIA-GERMANY)

Lecture about how accessibility of the music in a digital archive and our collective memory influences the composer and the listener.
How does the notional system of footnotes that is always present in our consciousness work?
We consider the case where a reference to the self-evident leads to acceleration of the syntax, or vice versa - creates gaps and breaks in the musical text.

1. The history figure of silence since the Baroque era.
Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Liszt, Mahler, Schoenberg.

2. Today's situation.
Music that is written, but doesn’t sound. Gaps in the used historical material, reductionism, the rejection of virtuosity.
Dmitry Kurliansdky, Vadim Karasikov, Vladimir Ranneev, Kirill Shyrokov, Bernhard Lang

`MOMENTAUFNAHMEN / CAPRICHOS´ AND `A BLURRING CLOUD´

- EXPLORING THE HERMENEUTIC ASPECT OF CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

LECTURE BY COMPOSER MICHAEL QUELL (GERMANY)

During the lecture will be explored the hermeneutic dimension of contemporary composition in a way as an arising of a mental dimension of a work – somewhat as a mental content – out of the specific structural aspects of the music. Content not considered as coming from outside or not put on the music from outside but rather resulting from the inner structural specific configurations or processes of the piece. That means that in this concept on the one hand a completely autonomy of music is possible whereas on the other hand a distinctly relation to a mental subject such as a philosophical, a physical etc. subject at the same time is feasible, too and furthermore, instead of mutually excluding they are  rather enriching each other. At the beginning of the lecture we will in that way analyze and discover the 4th movement of the guitar-solo-cycle `Momentaufnahmen / Caprichos´ which is clearly related to the respective etching of Francisco de Goya “El sueno de la razon” and we will explore both dimensions of the work: the distinctive autonomy of the musical work and at the same time its relation to the mental content of the Goya-etching on an abstract level. While analyzing the piece we will open a new third dimension of the work which is a completely new one, transcending the two others mentioned before (autonomy and relation to the etching). This way of composition is in a specific musical way related to some philosophical ideas of the late Nietzsche and some other philosophers of science and epistemological philosophers like for example Peter Eisenhardt. In the second part of the lecture we will discover this aspect in my composition “A Blurring Cloud – Geschöpfe der Fahrt” which is related to a poem of Botho Strauss. There we will in particular discover the significance of the very specific instrumentation of the work in its relation to the aesthetic concept of the composition.

Michael Quell is a German composer. He lives in Fulda, Germany, teaches at various academies and lectures at several universities. Since 2007 he has held a lectureship in musicology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. In the recent years his works have been awarded with various prizes, such as Frankfurt Art Prize (1989), the Berlin International Composition Award (1989), a première at the Gaudeamus composers competition in Amsterdam (1988), the International Elisabeth-Schneider Prize in Freiburg (2003), Barlow Commissioning Grant (2011), Composition Award of Bowling Green State University (2014) etc.His works have been performed at international festivals such as S.E.M.A. (Semaine Européenne des Musiques d'Aujord'hui) in Paris, the Festival de musique in Montreux/Vevey, the Gaudeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, the Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt, the Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, International Pianoforum ... antasten ... Heilbronn, Festival Slowind 2005 in Ljubljana, Chamber Music America Los Angeles, Contemporary Music Festival Cortona, Entrecuerdas Festival Santiago, Chile, SoundScape Festival Pavia, Soundways Festival, St. Petersburg, Músicaviva Festival Cuenca, Ecuador, Montevideo, La Plata, Perth, Melbourne, New York etc.) as well as being recorded by numerous domestic and foreign broadcasting companies (HR, WDR, BR, DLF, DLR, MDR, NDR, Radio Suisse Romande, Netherlands Radio, KPFK, CBC, NRK etc.).Furthermore his works have been published by the TONOS-Musikverlag Baden Baden, and some of his compositions are also available on CD (Bayer, Dabringhaus, Neos).Recently his works have been mainly concerned with the chances and
possibilities of composition in interdisciplinary dialogue.
